I love all the Winston brother’s so much but there is something special about Cletus. He is quiet and mischievous and filled with so much heart. While reading Beard Science I fell in love with him and adored learning all his ends and outs. He’s just so much more than meets the eye. The man makes me melt!

Today I’m excited to share 5 Things You Didn’t Know about Cletus Winston from Beard Science by the fabulous Penny Reid. A big THANK YOU to Penny for sharing more details of the loveable Cletus Winston, they’re all fantastic!!! I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite quotes that made me smile big time. Enjoy!

If you’ve not read the book before, I should probably start with an introduction. Hands down Beard Science was one of my absolute FAVORITE books of 2016 (it made my Top 15 Reads list). 6 stars all the way! I highly recommend it, it’s a must read for sure. :-)

Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So… what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

‘Beard Science’ is the third book in the Winston Brothers series, is a full-length romantic comedy novel, and can be read as a standalone.

5 out of 5 stars

This was above and beyond, a 6 star read for me!!!! I don’t think I can say enough positive things to explain just how deeply I loved this book and how much it moved me. Book hangover for days!!! The first line in my notes at 14% is "I can't take my eyes off the page. I feel overcome. I don't know how else to explain it." That feeling stuck with me through the entire book. It was so brilliantly written. To me it was perfection. I don't know how Penny Reid does it but I'm so thankful that she does. 5 Things You Didn't Know about Cletus Winston from Beard Science by Penny Reid | About That Story

1. He’s left handed, but taught himself to write with his right hand (so he can switch back and forth). Some of his brothers think he’s left handed, some think he’s right handed. He will neither confirm nor deny (his handed-ness) when asked point blank.

2. Cletus became a bone marrow donor as a way to track down individuals with shared Yuchi (Native American) ancestry.

3. Claire McClure (formerly Scarlett St. Claire) was Cletus’ first kiss.

4. Cletus is allergic to shellfish, which means he’s also allergic to roaches.

5. The only kind of candy Cletus will eat are those that are actually good for you (and therefore taste terrible). He has a stash of molasses chews and unsweetened baking chocolate squares. However, he also carries true black liquorice (from the liquorice plant) and offers them to people he doesn’t like (due to their adverse medicinal properties, i.e. increasing blood pressure and acting as a diuretic).

favorite-quotes

“I don’t like to judge people. I love it.” – Cletus. Penny Reid, Beard Science

“I hadn’t seen Jennifer in a week. Absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. Whoever said that was a damn fool. Absence makes the heart suicidal. Take my heart for example. It hadn’t stopped hurling itself against my ribs—at odd times, day or night—for a week.” - Cletus. Penny Reid, Beard Science

“Are you serious?” “As an armadillo in a laundry mat” – Cletus. Penny Reid, Beard Science

“Crap. She’s going to cry. This was a situation that required neutralizing. I placed my hand over hers and gave her a squeeze. “There, there.” Fruit cake. “Calm down—” - Cletus. Penny Reid, Beard Science

“You’ll always have the advantage of me, Jenn. Because I’m lost without you.” - Cletus. Penny Reid, Beard Science
