Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He's got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. If he can't have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers...

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him...

4 out of 5 stars

This is such a fantastic series and this was another great story. I am really enjoying all the details that are learned, the different connections and depth of the characters. It's just so well developed and detailed, I can't get enough.

I liked Butch and Marissa’s story a lot but it took me a while to get into it. I wasn't a huge Marissa fan in the beginning because she was so sheltered, almost to the point of annoying and over the top. But she grew and learned and came into her own and by the end I really liked her. I've always liked Butch and had so many questions about how he was going to fit into the story. I love how he was connected to everything and how it all played out.

Butch and Marissa were definitely drawn to one another but there was a lot of up and down monotony with their relationship, that part of the story felt slightly drawn out to me. They did have some nice, sweet moments as well as some very passionate, erotic ones, I liked that connection they shared. I also liked their conclusion at the end, that made me happy. The last lingering question I had about Butch was answered in the epilogue too, I loved how it all came together at the end.

I am loving the other stories that are developing. We got a lot of Vicious in this and I found myself wanting more of him.  He and Butch have a very interesting bro-mance going on and as much as I liked to say I totally got it, I didn't. I am really looking forward to the next book which is V’s story to maybe get more of an understanding.

I'm liking the build with John and where all that is going. I also found myself  interesting in the bad guy Mr. X and what he was after. I was happy to see more Wrath too, they're all such great characters.

I don't feel like I was on the edge of my seat but I was into it and liking the story and loving what it added to the series. Another awesome addition to the BDB!
