Book Review: Lessons in Heartbreak by Karla Sorensen

This book had me feeling all the things. I loved Ruby and Griffin together and their growth throughout the story. I love how Karla Sorensen combines the fun and the poignant moments together. It was really well done!

Lessons in Heartbreak (The Kings #1) by Karla Sorensen

A playboy football player. A shy librarian. When old friends reunite, opposites attract in a witty and lighthearted romance about taking chances and falling in love against the odds.

It’s an unwritten rule somewhere: small-town librarians shall not commit spontaneous acts, for fear of mortal embarrassment. I’d certainly just proved it true, though hiring an escort was perfectly logical. How else should I overcome my fear of intimacy without risking heartbreak?

Unfortunately, what came next wasn’t so logical.

Instead of a dating coach, Griffin King showed up. Yes, that Griffin King: my childhood neighbor and now, to my dismay, an obscenely handsome pro football player. He’s not actually an escort, but how was I supposed to know that?

Avoiding him after the mix-up is impossible. The man is everywhere—put in time-out by his agent after a PR snafu. Griffin might be an outrageous flirt determined to torment me until I snap, but he’s also the perfect man to help me.

The lessons aren’t what I thought they’d be. Neither is Griffin. Every time we touch, every time he shows me a different side to myself—and to him—I can’t help but wonder if we’re about to break another rule: the playboy and the good girl aren’t supposed to fall in love.

4 out of 5 stars

Lessons in Heartbreak was a wonderful story! Ruby and Griffin were total opposites, but they had an undeniable pull between them that created all these fantastic moments, and I adored them together. From the sweet to the funny, the heartwarming moments and mild drama, I loved the build and slow burn happening as their layers were peeled back and they opened their hearts and embraced their future. This story had me feeling all the things!

I loved how Ruby and Griffin reconnected, giving the story an entertaining feel but with the undertones of something more emotional to come. They had excellent banter that was incredibly fun and a lot of playful scenes throughout that had me smiling. When the heavier undertones came through and histories were learned, I felt for them both. I liked learning why Ruby held herself back, but I loved her putting herself out there to really experience life. I loved Griffin, he was such a good guy and so much more than his past mistakes and I liked his growth. I liked how he was there for Ruby, encouraging her to step outside of her shell. I loved watching their friendship grow into more as feelings developed. I loved them opening up and being vulnerable, and the build to electric chemistry.

Their friends Lauren and Marcus were awesome, and I couldn't get enough of them and the small side story they had going on. I loved seeing Liam from The Best of All, that was exciting. I liked learning about the relationship Griffin had with his brother Barrett, and I am very much looking forward to Barrett’s story next in the Single Dad Dilemma.

I had such a great time reading this and thought the overall development was well done. There were entertaining moments and emotional ones as well. By the time I got to the end, I was thrilled for Ruby and Griffin and their heartfelt HEA!
