A Pound of Flesh (A Pound of Flesh #1) by Sophie Jackson
Haunted by nightmares of her father’s street murder fifteen years ago, Kat Lane decides to face her fears and uphold his legacy of helping others by teaching inmates at a New York prison. There she meets arrogant Wesley Carter, who’s as handsome as he is dangerous, as mysterious as he is quick-witted, and with a reputation that ensures people will keep their distance.
As teacher and student, Kat and Carter are forced to leave their animosities at the door and learn that one should never judge a book by its cover. As Carter’s barriers begin to crumble, Kat realizes there’s much more to her angry student than she thought, leaving them to face a new, perilous obstacle: their undeniable attraction to one another.
When Carter is released and Kat continues to tutor him on the outside, the obstacles mount. Can they fight the odds to make their relationship work? Will Kat’s family and friends ever accept her being with someone of his background? And will Kat’s discovery of Carter’s role on the night her father died force them apart forever...or unite them?
Holy wow this was amazing! From beginning to end I was hooked on this beautiful and intense story about redemption and second chances that is full of passion and emotion. Loved it!
From the prologue I was invested. It was intense and I couldn't wait to learn everything. Kat and Carter are such strong characters and the development of their relationship and their personal growth was an amazing journey to read. I loved Kat and her attitude and how she held her own. Carter was just so intense and guarded so seeing those layers start fall of him was really incredible. They both had major things happen in their pasts and it made for a really intense, emotional story. Every time they opened up it was just so heartfelt and real, I couldn't help but be caught in the moment. All the feelings they had for one another, that push and pull, the need they felt, it was just amazing!
Kat and Carter have a slow burn to their relationship. I love a really good give-as-good as-you-get bickering that is laced with powerful chemistry and these two had it. When that slow burn erupts, umm... WOW! So much passion and hotness! It was crazy good!
There were lots of characters at play and I thought they were well written. There are multiple POV's and I loved the different incites and perspectives and thought they transitioned well. There were bits of drama throughout that really helped to keep things interesting. I thought the character and story development was great, excellent pace. Wonderful, descriptive writing that really pulls you in.
I really was captivated. It was just an excellent story with little twists and turns that kept me in my toes and wanting more. Carter’s best friend Max made appearances throughout the story and was a big part of the last chapter (which was super intense!). I cannot wait for more about Max. His story is next in An Ounce of Hope.
I am officially a fan of Sophie Jackson! :-)
