Review: Neanderthal Seeks Human (Knitting in the City #1) by Penny Reid

I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to start this series… and for reading it out of order. I totally enjoyed Neanderthal Seeks Human and am looking forward to more Knitting in the City.

There are three things you need to know about Janie Morris: 1) She is incapable of engaging in a conversation without volunteering TMTI (Too Much Trivial Information), especially when she is unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her more than Quinn Sullivan, and 3) She doesn't know how to knit.

After losing her boyfriend, apartment, and job in the same day, Janie Morris can't help wondering what new torment fate has in store. To her utter mortification, Quinn Sullivan- aka Sir McHotpants- witnesses it all then keeps turning up like a pair of shoes you lust after but can't afford. The last thing she expects is for Quinn- the focus of her slightly, albeit harmless, stalkerish tendencies- to make her an offer she can't refuse.

4 out of 5 stars

This was entertaining and strange and weird and totally enjoyable and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Janie is just so eccentric and in her own head and slightly oblivious to the obvious but she's also so incredibly sweet, wicked smart, full of crazy facts, and completely loyal and caring to her friends. She pretty much says whatever she thinks which can be super funny and I loved the entertainment it brought to the story. I found her character to be very endearing. It took me until about 25% to really get her but after she clicked for me, it was smooth sailing.

Quinn's was really sweet and I loved his conversations with Janie and all the meanings of his looks and comments. I liked him flirting with her and her reactions. I loved their dialogue together for sure and wish there was more of it. There is a nice build happening between the her and Quinn. It's a slow burn and I enjoyed how it unfolded.

I loved the overall story and where everything was going. I liked the added element with Janie's sister that brought a bit of drama to the mix. The ending was awesome and totally sold it for me. The writing was really good but I felt it could get overly descriptive. Because of that, even though I was loving the storyline, it made it seem slow out at times.

Definitely a good start to the series. Janie and her quirky self coming out of her shell and opening up and trusting was really great. And Quinn and the epilogue at the end, that was awesome. Loved getting to see some insight from him. I loved Janie's friends and what a tight knit group they are. I am looking forward to reading their individual stories.

All and all I enjoyed it and thought this was a fantastic read. A few drawn out and wordy spots but it was unique, super sweet and entertaining with these really endearing characters that I can't help but love it. It just made me happy!
