Consumed (Firefighters #1) by J. R. Ward
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Anne Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family’s scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.
Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...
By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.
Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.
Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.
Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.
From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm.
4 out of 5 stars
This was a fantastic story that pulled me in right from the start. I pretty much held my breath the first 10%! It was heart-stopping and intense and I was excited to see what would happen next. There's drama and emotion, pain and tragedy, I was eating up the details and enjoying it all. There's a big cast of characters, multiple POVs, a few sub plots and connections happening to tie it all together.
Danny and Anne are so flawed and broken but I found them really compelling and intriguing as they work through their guilt and issues. I really liked the pull they had on one another, they had great chemistry happening but a lot of pain underneath which almost made it feel more intense and I loved them working through it all in the midst of their turmoil.
There was a lot of drama, conflict, tension, and angst. The writing was really good but I felt it could be overly descriptive at times. It flowed well for the most part but some of the sub plots felt rushed like I was missing something, I liked them, they just didn't feel flushed out. I liked the element of suspense that was in play about the arsonist. It had a slow, subtle build to it but I thought it was going to be more of a major plot point. When everything comes to a head, it was over pretty quick.
All in all, I thought this was an awesome read and I absolutely enjoyed it and would recommend it. J. R. Ward is a heck of a story teller! I was caught up in everything and had a really hard time putting it down. I thought this was an excellent introduction to a new series and am extremely excited to see where it goes.
