Book Review: Complicated by Kristen Ashley

This was such an awesome story. I loved Hixon and Greta and the amazing cast of characters that were introduced. I’d love for this to turn into a series, I’m excited where it all could go.

Complicated by Kristen Ashley

synopsis_thumb2_thumb_thumb

When small town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn’t be stronger, but the timing couldn’t be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids, and himself, is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that’s perfect for them—a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She’s learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that’s what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can’t fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta’s finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that’s happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely…Complicated.

5 out of 5 stars

This was awesome! I really liked the main characters, watching them come together and fall in love, and all the smaller stories happening that were woven in. It was a page-turner!

Greta and Hix were something else and I loved getting to know them. I’ll admit, in the beginning, a part of me didn’t want to like Hix because he didn't’ make a great first impression. But the more I got to know him and understand what he was going through, I started to root for him. By the end, I loved him. Now Greta, I loved her from the start. So tough but loving and she gave with her whole heart. I completely got her. I loved their amazing chemistry and the crazy back and forth the two of them had going on. There was a nice amount of heat too which I always like but I love it when I can really feel that connection and love between the characters. It was just really well done.

I really enjoyed the build to everything, the timeline in which the story took place, and the element of suspense that was introduced. And the drama... so much drama! I ate it up! There was tension and angst from all kinds of different sources and threats to keep me on my toes. I love a well-written villain and did this story have them, several times I wanted to throw my Kindle. I love the emotion it evoked out of me and what it brought to the story.

There was a great cast of characters. Hixon’s kids, Greta’s brother, all the wonderful people in their community. It was a full, in-depth story filled with great moments and emotion. I also like that it’s not just about the main couple but a culmination of things, time spans, and connections created within the story.

Hands down, this was a great story with excellent characters and a wonderful build. It was a long story but I was always excited to pick up my Kindle to find out what would happen next. It was Complicated but so worth it. I definitely recommend this!
