Book Review: Pucked Off (Pucked #5) by Helena Hunting

Pucked Off is one of my favorite books in the Pucked series and not to be missed! I was hooked the entire time, completely connected to the story and rooting for Lance and Poppy to get their HEA. I highly recommend it!

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance."

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

5 out of 5 stars

This was an exceptional story. Intense, emotional, and oh so sweet. I loved Lance and Poppy coming together and this beautiful relationship they formed, it was so heartfelt, raw, and real. I couldn't put it down!

I loved Lance so much. This messed up, broken man, in such a bad place, and coming off an extremely toxic relationship had me rooting for him. I swear that the first chapter was so somber and intense, it had me holding my breath, I could feel his pain. I loved Poppy. She was the sweetest girl, so full of kindness, patience, and caring. I loved their relationship and how it evolved. There was great character development as their pasts are learned and the story unfolds. As tense as it made me feel at times, I loved the build and how it all played out. Lance had such an evolution over the course of the story, dealing with so many things and past hurts, it was really well done. Sweet Poppy was wonderful, so perceptive to him and his needs, so understanding. I love how she stood her ground when she needed to though. They fit so well together.

Helena Hunting has such an engaging way of telling a story, hooking me, pulling me in and making me feel the emotion like I'm a part of the story. Thankfully she has a knack for bringing in levity, creating a nice balance as well. I appreciated the lighter moments, the bits of sweet and heat mixed in with the angst and tenseness. There a few really fun, standout scenes that I enjoyed. Thank goodness for Violet, that woman can make any situation fun. I loved seeing Lances’ teammates and where they were at in their life, that made me happy.

I loved this. While reading, it reminded me of the Clipped Wings series for some reason, probably because it was more intense. It's got the fun elements the Pucked series is known for but for me, this one was so much more. It's probably my favorite in the series. That Scottish accent didn't hurt anything either. This story is not to be missed!
