Book Review: The Prospector's Only Prospect by Dani Collins

I had so much fun reading The Propsector's Only Prospect. It was so entertaining and I couldn't read it fast enough. I loved the grumpy Virgil and how hard he fell for sweet Marigold. Be sure to check this one out!

After eight days in a cramped stagecoach, divorcée Marigold Davis already regrets her decision to come to Denver City to marry. She certainly didn’t realize she’d signed up for mosquitoes, mud, and scores of rough men eyeing her like a hot meal on a cold day. But with her life in Kansas all but incinerated, Marigold needs a husband. Even if she’s not the bride that gold prospector Virgil Gardner is expecting…

Virgil Gardner has a reputation as a grumpy hard-ass, and he’s fine with it. He’s also no fool—this is not the woman he agreed to marry. It takes a tough-as-nails woman to survive the harshness of a Rocky Mountain gold claim, and this whiskey-eyed, gentle beauty is certainly
not the type. Now it’s just a matter of how quickly she’ll quit so he can find a wife who will stick. Someone who can care for the only thing he values even more than gold–his children.

But Marigold isn’t about to give in. Cramped in a one-room shack. Berry picking turned into a bear escape. Or cooking for an entire crew of bottomless pits. She’s got more grit than most. And just when Virgil starts to realize his replacement bride might be the treasure he’s been looking for, an unannounced guest arrives…to change everything.

5 out of 5 stars

I loved this! The Prospector’s Only Prospect was such an entertaining and fun read. I loved the characters, the time period, and the playful banter. It was a delight! It had a great flow and I liked the dual POVs. There was just the right amount of emotion with a little drama and quite a bit of heat. It made me ridiculously happy to read!

I loved the characters. I loved learning about Virgil, I adored him with his kids and how that relationship grew. I loved him sharing, his softer side coming out, and the small but sweet gestures he did. There is something about a grumpy man that pulls me in but when that grumpy has some soft and you can feel those feelings, it's awesome. I loved Marigold so much. I felt for her and the circumstance she was in and how she was putting herself out there to make a better life for herself. She was hard-working, smart, and tenacious. Both Virgil and Marigold were pretty stubborn and made me crazy at times but they had this back-and-forth verbal sparring that was so witty and made me smile. I loved them opening up and their walls coming down. The sexual tension between them was fantastic and when things ramp up between them, holy hot and steamy!

I loved this era, the bits of history shared, and learning about what everyone was going through. I like the bonds the men formed and how they became their own rag-tag family of sorts. Virgil’s children were adorable. There were so many sweet moments with them that made me melt. I also really liked the relationship that Marigold formed with them.

This was my first time reading this author and I am thrilled with what I got and am looking forward to more. It was an entertaining, easy read that had me rooting for Virgil and Marigold to get their HEA. This was an exciting and charming read and I enjoyed every second!

I don't know if I've read a book set in the Gold Rush before this one but I definitely need more of this time period in my life. Do you have any recommendations? Let me know!
