Book Review: At the Edge of Surrender by A.L. Jackson

I was so excited to read this story that I dove right in after finishing Under an Endless Moon. It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. At the Edge of Surrender was intense and emotional, and I was caught up in it all. A definite must-read!

A surprise single dad, small town romantic suspense…

I’m the last guy on the planet who should be a dad. My life is chaos. My sins written dark and deep.
So, imagine my surprise when my doorbell rings and I open it to find the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen standing on the other side.
And she’s holding the hand of a little girl who looks just like me.

Emery tells me her sister, the child’s mother, is dead.
I feel like dirt since she’s a woman I can hardly remember, and it’s no wonder Emery doesn’t trust that I’m worthy of caring for her niece.
But I can’t turn my back, and I insist on raising Maci.
So, we strike a deal—she’ll stay with me for one month to ensure the little girl is safe.

Emery tries to hate me for who I am, but neither of us can resist the attraction that blazes between us.
One brush of her hand, and she has me on my knees.
One kiss, and I’m falling fast.
Soon, we find ourselves tangled in my sheets.

But when it’s discovered her sister’s death wasn’t accidental, the secret life I’ve been living collides with the past Emery has tried to keep hidden.
And when the fiends come back to finish the job they started, I’m in a race against time to save the two people who I’ve come to love most…

5 out of 5 stars

At the Edge of Surrender was intense, emotional, heartbreaking, and beautiful all rolled into one. This book completely consumed me from the start. I was instantly drawn into the world and characters, and couldn’t wait for all the secrets to unravel. The build was incredible as everything came to light and Emery and Kane got their well-deserved happily ever after. This was a stellar story full of amazing detail and layers.

Emery and Kane blew me away. I hurt for Emery as her past was revealed, and understood why she held herself back. I loved her strength, how she cared for her niece, and how deeply she was grieving. I felt so much for Kane and everything he had endured growing up, and what he had to do to survive. I felt his conflict when he learned he had a daughter and but loved him working to figure it all out. Kane and Emery’s immediate connection was intense, they're both shrouded in secrets, and I loved everything being revealed bit by bit. Every detail pulled me in, making me want more. Their relationship was messy, raw, and real, filled with emotion and drama. But it was also full of these sweet, heartfelt moments, playfulness, and serious heat. The fire and pull they had for one another was palpable. The passion these two exuded was off the charts. I loved them truly opening up and healing from the past.

Kane’s crew was the best, and I liked getting updates on the first two couples in the series. I love the found family they’ve created and how they support one another. From the more drama-filled moments to the teasing and lighthearted ones, I couldn’t get enough. I especially adored how Charleigh and Raven brought Emery into the fold. The kids were pure gold. Nolan was adorable as ever, but Maci completely stole my heart. Emery’s dedication to honoring her sister’s wishes and Kane instantly stepping up for Maci melted me. I loved Kane's growing relationship with his daughter, every time he looked at this little girl, it was genuinely heartwarming.

The writing was exceptional. It's like it broke me down a bit and then built me back up, I could feel it all. I loved the past and present timelines and how those details aligned perfectly, revealing secrets and connections. The suspense element was fantastic, I loved the lurking danger, and I was filled with anticipation for everything to be okay. The icing on the cake was the epilogues, bringing more goodness and introducing the next book's heroine for Theo. I am already excited!

I cannot begin to say enough good things. This is hands down my favorite in the series (so far!) and easily one of my top reads of the year. This is a must-read! It completely captivated me!
