Book Review: A Very Good Bad Idea by Emma Chase

Emma Chase is one of my favorite authors, so when I learned she was releasing a new book, I jumped at the chance to read it. A Very Good Bad Idea was a great enemies-to-lovers story filled with entertaining banter, tension, and spice. I could not read this story fast enough. And how cute is the cover? Love it!

synopsis_thumb2_thumb
New York Times bestselling author Emma Chase is back with this red-hot romantic comedy about two rival real estate developers who inherit the same lucrative property in a small beach town. There’s just one catch: they have to live in it…together.

No loopholes. No backing out. No leaving for four months.

Damon Burke is intense, handsome and vengefully calculating—he's also certain he'll outlast his competitor.

Jade Buchanan is brilliant, ruthless, and absolutely not losing to
him.

But the house seems to have a mind of its own. With faulty wiring, a leaking roof, drafty windows and the occasional wild-life infestation, it just might be trying to kill them. And the more Damon and Jade try to oust each other from the property, the more it brings them together.

Sparks fly, tempers clash—but eventually, all their walls come crumbling down.

It's a bad idea to get too close to your enemy. To care about them, need them, want them more than you've ever wanted anything.

But when rivalry becomes something more than they ever expected, Damon and Jade discover love can be a very good bad idea.

4 out of 5 stars

A Very Good Bad Idea was an awesome enemies-to-lovers story! I loved the verbal sparring, the building tension and attraction, and the simmer between Jade and Damon as they were forced together. I thought this had a great combination of angsty and sweet with the perfect amount of emotion and heat. This was a quick, entertaining read with a wonderful happily-ever-after!

I really liked Damon and Jade, but it took a while for me to warm up to Jade. She was a bit hard to like at first, but I knew there was more to her and I couldn’t wait to find out what made her tick. After really getting to know her, I loved her. Damon seemed closed off and hard, but he was really sweet and had a heart of gold. There was so much fight and hostility between them from the start, they could be diabolical. They tried to best each other with their snarky banter and pranks, and while a lot of it was super fun, it could also be a bit over the top. I liked it when the attraction between them started to build, and I loved it when they started to soften and be vulnerable. I liked learning about them and really understanding their motivations and how they were in this predicament. It was wonderful when the banter got lighter and the spice kicked in. I enjoyed them being in their bubble and really getting to know each other.

Damon and Jade have a great friend group that injected bits of humor when they came into play. Besides Damon and Jade's drama together, Jade has some outside tensions coming at her that were a nice add to the story. I loved her really figuring out her worth and letting certain things go.

Overall, I really liked this and thought it was a solid story, but it really hit its stride for me in the second half. I liked the angst, the witty scenes that had me laughing out loud, and all the spice. The ending though, with everything wrapping up and big feelings coming out, brought it home. I thought this was a really entertaining read!

things-to-note_thumb2
A Very Good Bad Idea was originally released on audiobook on July 9, 2026. Since I prefer to read with my eyes first, I patiently waited for this story to be available on Kindle and Paperback. It was absolutely worth the wait! Now that I've read it, I plan on doing a reread with the audiobook.

I'm pretty sure I've read every book written by this author. Who is an author you've read every book of? Let me know!
