Book Review: Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood #8) by J. R. Ward

I finally made it to John Matthew's story. I have loved the build to get here and I was filled with so much anticipation. It was so worth it! I loved him and Xhex together. Another awesome story in the BDB series!

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.

5 out of 5 stars

This was so fantastic! I loved John and Xhex and this detailed world filled with wonderful and complicated characters. There was so much depth, emotion, and love. By the end, my heart was bursting!

I have wanted John Matthew’s story since he was first introduced and I couldn't have asked for more. This starts right where the last book leaves off and there was so much pain and longing because John and Xhex were apart. I swear I couldn't read fast enough because I couldn’t wait for them to reconnect. Getting insight on Xhex and getting to know her was great. She's been such a harsh character putting up a front so I loved her opening up, trusting, and sharing. John was wonderful. Sweet and caring, yet strong and proud. They had a crazy, intense, wild ride. I loved that push and pull between them filled with so many twists and turns.

There are a lot of characters in play and stories happening and there was this incredible build as it evolved. There were so many amazing connections that I could see coming together while reading and I found it all extremely exciting. Told from several different POVs, from past and present, I was hooked. I also adored the fact that there were some origin stories happening. It's complex and detailed and honestly, all-consuming.

At the end, everything came together like stars aligning and it was awesome. There were a few things I didn't see coming! Besides John and Xhex, there were some major revelations and healing happening. It was so smartly done and well thought out. There is action and drama... and so much heart.

Everything about this book and series has me hooked. I’m looking forward to what's to come next with Payne, Blay and Qhuinn, Layla, and Mhurder. I want to read them all! Absolutely brilliant!
