The Girl in the Mist was such an exciting read filled with mystery, suspense, and romance. I felt so pulled into the story and was excited to find out what would happen next. This was an excellent way to kick off the Misted Pines series.
The Girl in the Mist (Misted Pines #1) by Kristen Ashey
Renowned author Delphine Larue needs a haven. A crazed fan has gone over the deep end, and she’s not safe. Her security team has suggested a house by a lake. Secluded. Private. Far away. In a beautiful area of the Northwest close to the sleepy town of Misted Pines. It’s perfect. So perfect, Delphine has just moved in, and she’s thinking she’ll stay there forever.
Until she sees the girl in the mist.
After that, everything changes.
Delphine quickly learns that Misted Pines isn’t so sleepy. A little girl has gone missing, and the town is in the grips of terror and tragedy. The local sheriff isn’t up for the job. The citizens are up in arms. And as the case unfolds, the seedy underbelly of a quiet community is exposed, layer by layer.
But most importantly, girls are dying.
There seems to be only one man they trust to find out what’s happening.
The mysterious Cade Bohannan.
4 out of 5 stars
I was so excited to start The Girl in the Mist and
was not disappointed. I liked the characters, the town and its dynamics,
the evolving mystery, and the fantastic build to all the dots connecting. I
was completely invested.
I loved Delphine and Cade. I liked learning their history
and what made them who they are. They meet in the middle of an intense
situation for Delphine so I liked the slow build to their relationship while
that drama got worked out. They had excellent chemistry and I loved the sexual
tension between them. In addition to Delphine’s troubles, girls in town are
dying and I liked learning the nitty-gritty of what was happening and who was
who as it all played out and how it brought Delphine and Cade closer together.
I really liked Delphine and Cade’s kids and the bonds they
all formed and the family they brought together. There were a lot of sweet
bonding moments taking place and I adored them all. This was a romantic
suspense story but it also felt very much like a contemporary romance to me as
far as the relationship building was concerned, I thought it balanced well.
There were a lot of characters in play and different
stories intersecting. I liked the building mystery and all the layers and was
guessing until the end. It was wild and twisted though I was missing that gripping,
edge-of-my-seat feeling while reading. Beyond the suspense element, the smaller
stories mixed in were pretty low-key drama-wise but enjoyable. I loved the
mentions of characters from other series as well, those are always a favorite
of mine. I love Kristen Ashley’s style of writing with her descriptive details
though occasionally it did make the story feel drawn out and I was anxious to
get back to solving the mystery.
Overall, I thought this was awesome. I was excited while
reading, loved the development, and never wanted to put the book down. I
loved the picturesque details of Misted Pines, and the wonderful HEA Cade and
Delphine got. I can’t wait for the next book, bring on The Girl in the
Woods!
