Book Review: The Chosen (Black Dagger Brotherhood #15) by J. R. Ward

Today I've got more Black Dagger Brotherhood on the agenda. Up next is The Chosen with Xcor and Layla. This was a fantastic story, I loved the drama and intensity and the amazing build. I can't get enough of this series!

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love... or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

5 out of 5 stars

I have been Team Xcor since he was first introduced so I was thrilled to finally start his story with Layla. There are so many ups and downs, a lot of tension, pain, and emotion. It was so fantastic and I loved every second. All the feelings, drama, and intensity made for an epic read!

I loved learning about Xcor, he’s got such a heartbreaking past. I loved watching him change and grow. He is so much more than a hardened male, he's so sweet, caring, and deserving. I really enjoyed Layla becoming stronger over the course of the series and in this book, finding out who she is and embracing it. She hasn't always made the right choices along the way but I liked her figuring it out. I am a huge fan of Layla and Xcor as a couple and loved the emotional road of them getting to their HEA.

There were so many stories happening besides Layla and Xcor’s. There are Layla and Qhuinn, Qhuinn and Blay, Torment, Vishous, and more. It was awesome! There were so many fantastic details and the build was phenomenal. It pretty much jumped right into the drama and I was all in. I spent the majority of the story pretty ticked at Qhuinn, of course, he had his reasons but he stressed me out, I could not wait for him to pull it together. I loved the drama and tension between him and Layla, and with Blay too. I'm really excited for what's to come in the series and was thrilled to get more Trez after his heart-wrenching story in The Shadows.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is by far one of my favorite all-time series and this was a great addition. I love the attention to detail and the humor brought in. I loved the fighting, the drama, the tension. It was an all-consuming story!

things-to-note_thumb2
While the books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and the Black Dagger Legacy series (a spinoff of BDB) are all standalones, I highly suggest reading in order since they are set in the same world with interconnecting characters. Please follow the order as suggested on J. R. Ward's website. It mixes the Legacy series in with the Brotherhood series.
