Book Review: Darius by J. R. Ward
Darius (Black Dagger Brotherhood #0.5) by J. R. Ward

#1 New York Times bestseller J.R. Ward shares the powerful star-crossed love story of reader favorite, and original member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Darius.

Darius, son of Marklon, isn’t looking for love the night destiny comes to claim him. He’s also not interested in crashing his new car. But when a human woman runs out into the road and he must swerve to avoid killing her...everything goes off course.

Disillusioned by his King’s lack of leadership and the losses in the war against the Lessening Society, Darius finds purpose in protecting a woman he cannot make his own. Love finds a way, however—until the truth of what he is comes out and she leaves him in horror.

Unbeknownst to them both, Anne is carrying his young, a female who is destined to be Queen—and after a tragic reunion, he vows to protect their daughter. Resigned to perpetual sadness, he is determined to serve the memory of his beloved no matter the cost...unless by some miracle, fate sees fit to once again bring them together.

5 out of 5 stars

I absolutely loved Darius! A truly fantastic read. This was a story I wanted but didn't realize how much I needed. Learning about Darius and Anne had me holding my breath because I knew what was coming but I hung on every detail as they came together and fell in love. I loved their story, their ups and downs, and their beautiful happily ever after.

I loved Darius and Anne’s chance encounter and their instant connection, it’s like they were drawn to one another. I liked learning about Anne, her life, and what she was going through. I loved getting to know Darius and not just from the viewpoint of others in previous stories. I felt for Darius and all the turmoil he was in about the state of things in the Brotherhood. It was an odd and captivating thing watching them fall in love when I knew their end. When that fate finally came for Anne, even though I knew it was coming, I found it devastating. That's the power of J. R. Ward’s storytelling. I had no idea how they’d get there in the end but was thrilled beyond belief that they did.

I loved getting glimpses of some of the Brothers and how they used to be. I found myself getting emotional because I was reminded of everything Darius wanted for the Brotherhood and then thinking about how it all finally came to be. I adored his depth of love for Anne and Beth, their young. I loved seeing Fritz and the Scribe Virgin as well. I loved meeting a certain doctor and knowing about his connection to some of the other characters in the series, I thought it made a great addition. I also loved what the ending meant for John Matthew. There were a lot of really amazing moments happening.

I loved the details and thought there was an excellent build, I felt pulled in and engaged. Knowing the fates of Darius and Anne, I thought I was prepared for the emotion I would feel but the story gave me so much more than I thought it would, and I was expecting a lot. It was sweet and touching, and hard and heartbreaking. The epilogue was the best payoff ever and it absolutely thrilled me. It filled me up and made me happy and I found it to be an exceptional story!

Waiting for Darius to be released in print was an exercise in patience for me but totally worth the wait! It was previously released on audiobook on July 19, 2022.
